Lessons from Wild Horses
Wild Horses live in year-round family groups called bands. All horses show an innate intelligence, a sense of awareness and sensitivity to the environment around them at all times.
Lead horses are caretakers and know when the concern of the herd must be put before the individual. They reserve their energy for managing and organizing the herd with attention and care to even those on the bottom of the pecking order.
Each horse will find his or her position in the herd, generally determined by how they can best serve the group. There are bonds and relationships within the herd and each individual has a specific role and responsibility to the team. Information is passed on from one to the other through daily interactions.
Never underestimate a horses power of communication and ability to participate in complex patterns. They are responsive and instinctive.
Horses have a very strong sense of self preservation. Trust is built on a history of positive interaction.
Wild horses are genetically diverse – they are more able to deal with changing conditions and environments over time and can resist extreme drought or cold better than their domestic cousins. This complex social dynamic holds the wild horse bands together.
